What these numbers mean
  • Fresh-snow day: the station gained about 4" or more in 48 hours (3" when it stayed below freezing, or it caught heavy, cold snow that packed down), the same test Snowcall uses every morning.
  • Some snow: 2" or more in 48 hours, but not enough for a fresh-snow day. One snowfall can mark two days in a row, since each day looks back 48 hours.
  • Snow depth comes from each resort's federal SNOTEL station, not the resort, and isn't the resort's base. New snow settles, so depth gained runs a little under what fell.
  • Opening and closing days are from resort announcements and news, so treat them as approximate. For some winters (mostly before 2016) no date could be found: those use that mountain's 2016-26 average, are marked ~, and never count toward a usual, earliest or latest day.
  • Twenty winters is still a small sample: a pattern, not a forecast. Bluebird days come from a reconstruction of the sky (the ERA5 weather record), counted on lift days.

Snow data: USDA NRCS SNOTEL. Rule v3.3.

Map: contour lines from USGS 3DEP elevation data, every 1,000 ft.

Sky history: contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information 2026. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains.

What to expect

Once a mountain opens, Snowcall gives it one word every morning, so you know what kind of day it is before you drive up. The one to watch for is Bluebird: fresh snow and a clear sky.

Every mountain is measured the same way, from federal snow stations and the National Weather Service, not resort snow reports.

Until opening day, the weeks above come from twenty winters of those same stations.
