Privacy
No sign-up, ever required. We count; we never sell. Nothing we collect is sold or shared. The one outside company on Snowcall will be Google, whose ads will fill ad spots no sponsor has booked (below). Nothing else comes from anyone else's servers: no outside analytics, no other ad companies.
One cookie, so we can count people
The first time you open a page, Snowcall gives your browser a random code in a cookie (named sc_v). It's made up on the spot, says nothing about you, only ever comes back to snowcall.app, and page scripts can't read it. With it we keep, for that code: the first and last day it was seen, how many days and pages, where it first came from (like "Google" or "a bookmark"), the page it first landed on, phone, tablet or computer, and whether its visits looked like checking the day or planning a trip. We also note which sponsor spots were shown to that code and whether it tapped one, so we can tell a sponsor how many different people saw their spot. That's how we know how many different people use Snowcall and whether they come back. It isn't linked to your IP address, your city, your alerts or anything else, and a code not seen for 400 days is deleted, along with the cookie on your side. Clear your cookies and you're simply a new code.
Daily totals
We also keep simple daily totals, like how many times a page was viewed and roughly which city the views came from ("Boise: 212 page views today"). The city is Cloudflare's estimate from your connection; we never store your IP address, and the city is never stored with your code.
The same daily totals also count visits (arriving from another site, an app, or a bookmark), the name of the site that sent you if there was one (like "Google"), whether it was a phone, tablet or computer, and the hour of day. Each is just a number that goes up by one.
If you pick a region, in the menu at the top of a region's page or from its row on the home page, your phone or browser remembers it, so the Snowcall app on your Home Screen opens on that region next time. It's kept on your device only and never sent to us. Pick another region to change it.
When you leave a page, your browser also tells us roughly how long it was on screen (under 10 seconds, 10 to 30 seconds, up to 2 minutes, up to 10 minutes, or longer) and what kind of page it was, like "a mountain page". We add one to that day's total and keep nothing else. It helps us see which pages are worth the time.
Alerts
If you turn on alerts, your browser gives us a random address for sending them, plus the mountains and kinds of days you picked. That's all. Turn alerts off and we delete it. Alerts are delivered through your browser maker's push service (Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft).
Sponsors
When a page shows a sponsor, we add one to that sponsor's daily total for the page, the device type (phone, tablet or computer) and the rough city, the same way we count page views. If you tap a sponsor, we add one to its taps and send you to its site with a tag in the address saying you came from Snowcall. We also count how many different people saw and tapped each spot, using the code above. Sponsors get those totals and nothing else: never a code, a name or anything about you. Sponsors never affect calls.
Affiliate links and our own "This spot is open" note are counted the same way: one more on a daily total when shown or tapped. An affiliate link is left exactly as the company gave it, so its own code tells them the visit came through Snowcall; that's how a commission is paid. We send them nothing.
Ads from Google (coming)
Some ad spots will show ads from Google AdSense when no sponsor or affiliate link has booked them. That's how Snowcall stays free, with no sign-up and no subscription. Until they start, nothing on Snowcall loads from Google.
Once they appear, on pages with one of those ads, Google and its partners use cookies to show ads, which can be based on your visits to Snowcall and other sites. You can turn personalized ads off in Google's My Ad Center, and read how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Snowcall never gives Google your visitor code, your alerts or anything else we keep.
Ads stay in labelled spots below the calls and never affect them: no pop-ups, no full-screen ads, nothing that jumps the page. In Europe, the UK and Switzerland we show no consent pop-up: only ads Google allows without one, or none.
